The German Press describes the UK Parliament as a “Madhouse on the Thames” over its wrangling to leave the EU. Or like Turkeys voting for Christmas.
Is this just press hype? Or an insight into how little the Eurozone understands the UK and vice versa?
It doesn’t take much imagine the similarities and differences between the two countries. Germany the facilitator of two World Wars, beaten and occupied. Britian as one of the Allies who won, and never occupied. Both countries had empires.
Modern Germany the biggest economy in the Eurozone. Built on American money and a German work ethic. The UK struggled to adapt losing its industrial manufacturing base to Finance and Service sectors. Germany is part of the Euro land mass and the UK islands.
Indonesia one of the biggest continents of Islands is remarkable. Each island particularly the smaller ones manage to have different cultures. As though culture cannot cross water. Britian’s antipathy towards the continent through history and separated by water is still strong.
Culture doesn’t travel?
Europe stands for a community protecting itself against war and to have power in the World. The UK has had power in the World on its own terms. The attitude that Britain can do things alone isolated and protectionist is a reminder to a perceived more glorious past.
Each countyr having its own point of view: without managing to see the others perspective.
Together/ Separate. Separate/Together.
